Stephen J. O'Brien

Stephen J. O’Brien is a Partner and veteran trial lawyer focusing on Commercial Litigation. He handles complex commercial and regulatory matters, particularly those involving economic or statistical analyses.

In his more than 20 years of practice, Stephen has first-chaired 14 trials, 18 arbitration hearings, and more than 30 emergency hearings for temporary relief, including requests for temporary restraining orders and preliminary injunctions.

His representative experience includes serving as lead trial lawyer in a $40 million business valuation dispute in a divorce proceeding, defending an insurance company and its retirement plan fiduciaries in an ERISA “whipsaw” class action, and leading a four-day preliminary injunction trial for a transportation network company involving regulatory requirements and the peer-to-peer economy.

Stephen holds a PhD in Economics from the University of North Carolina (1995), a JD, cum laude, from Harvard Law School (1991), and a BA, magna cum laude, from Baylor University (1985). He has taught in the Department of Economics at Washington University and has served as an adjunct professor at St. Louis University since 1996. He is recognised in Best Lawyers in America and ranked in Chambers USA (Missouri) for Commercial Litigation.
