Robert T. Joseph is a Retired Partner in the firm's Competition Law practice, based in the Washington, DC office. He brings forty years of experience in the litigation and counseling of an extensive array of antitrust, trade regulation, and franchising matters, involving all of the major antitrust laws and subjects they embrace, including mergers and joint ventures in health care, technology, and other industries.
Mr. Joseph was involved in major lawsuits alleging price fixing, including class actions, such as the Chicago area hospitals wage-fixing litigation, the Glass Containers litigation, and the Corrugated Containers antitrust litigation. He successfully defended a building materials manufacturer from price-fixing and price-discrimination charges, participated in Sun Microsystems' prosecution of its antitrust claims against Microsoft (culminating in the largest settlement ever reported between two parties in private antitrust litigation), and represented the Nevada Division of Insurance in reviewing UnitedHealth's application to acquire Sierra Health.
From 2002 to 2003, Robert served as Chair of the 9,000-member American Bar Association Section of Antitrust Law. He holds a J.D., cum laude, from the University of Michigan Law School (1971) and an A.B., magna cum laude, from Xavier University (1968). Prior to joining the firm, he was a staff attorney at the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Competition, serving as Assistant to the Director of the Bureau from 1973 to 1974.
