R. Matthew Martin

R. Matthew Martin is a Partner and Deputy General Counsel in the firm's Litigation and Dispute Resolution practice, based in the Atlanta office, practicing in Commercial Litigation. He has four decades of experience in complex commercial litigation, including contract disputes, creditors' rights, securities, corporate governance, product liability, and bankruptcy, and has appeared as lead counsel in state and federal courts throughout the United States, having tried over 50 jury trials.

Mr. Martin has served as national counsel since 2004 for an international chemical company in lawsuits alleging personal injury from benzene exposure, obtained a defense verdict in favor of CIBC World Markets Corp. in a lawsuit seeking over $80 million, and won summary judgment in favor of a minority shareholder in a claim involving breach of contract and fraud. He has also represented senior officers of a public company in a class action and related SEC investigation.

He holds a J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Georgia School of Law (1981), where he was a member of the Law Review and the Order of the Coif, graduating second in his class, and a B.S., summa cum laude, in accounting from Duke University (1978). He has been recognized by Chambers USA in Commercial Litigation (2011-2025) and The Best Lawyers in America in Commercial Litigation (2013-present).
