Samuel R. Maizel

Samuel R. Maizel is a Partner in the Los Angeles office, leading the firm's healthcare industry restructuring efforts nationwide, practicing in Bankruptcy and Insolvency Law. He handles chapter 11 cases, financial restructurings, and has served as lead counsel to debtors, trustees, creditors' committees, and as a court-appointed trustee, examiner, and ombudsman. He is a nationally recognized expert in the unique issues that arise in the restructuring of healthcare entities.

Mr. Maizel's recent representations include leading the successful reorganization of Curitec, LLC, resolving a $32 million CMS claim for less than $10 million; co-leading the chapter 11 case of Borrego Community Health Foundation, which resulted in a $50+ million asset sale and a comprehensive settlement with the California Department of Health Care Services; and co-leading the Verity Health System chapter 11 case (the second-largest nonprofit hospital bankruptcy in US history), involving the sale of six hospitals for $600 million. He also represented RSG Group in its $100 million acquisition of Gold's Gym out of bankruptcy and served as counsel to the Liquidating Trustee in the First Guaranty Mortgage Company chapter 11 cases.

He holds a J.D. from the George Washington University School of Law (1985), an M.A. from Georgetown University (1983), and a B.S. from the United States Military Academy (1977). He is a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy and has been consistently recognized by Chambers USA in both Bankruptcy/Restructuring and Healthcare, by The Best Lawyers in America in Bankruptcy and Creditor Debtor Rights and Health Care Law, and by Lawdragon as one of the 500 Leading Global Bankruptcy and Restructuring Lawyers.
