Mary Mathew

Mary Mathew is a Partner and a member of Dentons' Intellectual Property and Technology practice. Her primary practice area is Trademark Law, and she has advised clients on protecting and enforcing their intellectual property rights for more than 15 years.

She provides legal and practical advice to clients in the social media, telecommunications, entertainment and venture technology fields, among others, including researching selected trademarks to assess availability and risks; handling all aspects of the registration process across multiple jurisdictions; enforcing copyright and trademark rights, including negotiating with third parties on domain name disputes, infringements and inter partes proceedings; managing working relationships with business managers; conducting IP due diligence in connection with secured transactions; and consulting on creative ways to increase the value of an IP portfolio.

She represents clients of all types and sizes, ranging from large international corporations to family-owned businesses in a wide variety of fields, including a well-known entertainment and media company and a leading social networking company.

Her representative experience includes managing, protecting and enforcing portfolios of IP rights, including trademarks, copyrights and designs; developing and implementing international and domestic filing strategies; and prosecuting and defending infringement claims worldwide. For a large technology company, she conducted complex trademark due diligence projects involving chain-of-title issues, licences and release of liens, working with foreign counsel, government officials and consulates to perfect chains of title. For a leading retailer, she advised on domain name management and disputes under UDRP, including managing a successful complaint with ICANN for domain name infringement against a third-party infringer.

She also coordinated a multi-class filing strategy and budget analysis for a large international software provider as part of the company's portfolio restructuring and expansion into more than 40 countries; evaluated and investigated the potential worldwide launch of a new brand name for a multimedia entertainment company; and conducted copyright due diligence involving thousands of registrations worldwide for a prominent nonprofit organisation.

She is recognised in the World Trademark Review 1000 – The World's Leading Trademark Professionals, Bronze ranking for prosecution and strategy, New York (2022–2026). She is a member of the International Trademark Association and the South Asian Bar Association of New York.

Prior to joining Dentons, she worked as an associate at a prominent general practice firm. During law school, she served as a student extern at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and was active in the law school's Intellectual Property and Transaction Clinic. She holds a JD from the University of New Hampshire Franklin Pierce School of Law (2000) and a BA from the Honors College, Stony Brook University (1997).
