Frederick L. Tolhurst

Frederick L. Tolhurst is Of Counsel at Dentons Cohen & Grigsby. His practice focuses on Intellectual Property Law, with an emphasis on intellectual property litigation and counseling, particularly strategies for protecting and exploiting patent and trademark rights.

Fred serves a broad range of clients, including industrial, manufacturing, retail and service companies. His experience includes litigation of claims asserting the infringement and validity of patents, trademarks and copyrights, misappropriation of trade secrets, licenses and technology transfer agreements, and preparation, prosecution and appeal of U.S. and foreign patent applications in the electrical, electronic, computer, biomedical and mechanical arts.

He has represented manufacturers in patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret disputes across the United States, including matters involving automated warehouse systems, photovoltaic panels, automotive accessories, specialty glass, gas detection devices, scientific instrumentation and consumer products. He also counsels clients on patentability, freedom-to-operate, infringement and strategic use of patents, as well as trademark availability, service marks and domain names.

He holds a JD from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and a BS, cum laude, from the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering. He is a member of the Allegheny County Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Bar Association and the Pittsburgh Intellectual Property Law Association.
