He has represented print and broadcast media clients in defamation, First Amendment and access‑to‑court proceedings, and has appeared before the Supreme Court of the United States. He has served as general counsel to the Indiana Broadcasters Association since 1997 and was instrumental in securing access for cameras in Indiana courtrooms. He has also led international pro bono missions to West Africa and Mongolia, training defence attorneys, judges and journalists on defamation law, press freedom and freedom of expression. Prior to private practice, he served as First Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana and as Chief Trial Counsel for the Eighth U.S. Army in Korea.
Dan holds a J.D. from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law (1962) and an A.B. from Indiana University (1959).
