Andrew C. Helman

Andrew C. Helman is a Partner in the Restructuring, Insolvency and Bankruptcy practice group at Dentons and the Portland Office Managing Partner, specialising in Bankruptcy and Insolvency Law. He focuses on bankruptcy and insolvency matters and works with all types of businesses, including those in the health care and cannabis sectors, to help them restructure and protect their assets.

Andrew has served as lead counsel to debtors, trustees, secured parties and others in chapter 11 cases, including independent counsel to a state attorney general in several chapter 11 cases in New England and Delaware. He has particular experience representing rural hospitals in chapter 11 cases and has successfully confirmed chapter 11 plans that have allowed rural hospitals to continue operating with restructured balance sheets. Notable representations include Curitec LLC, where he negotiated a resolution that restored payments to a direct medical equipment provider after Medicare ceased payments—reducing a claim from over $32 million to less than $10 million, with the presiding bankruptcy judge calling the result "incredible." He also led the successful reorganizations of Springfield Hospital, Penobscot Valley Hospital and Calais Regional Hospital, and represented the Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors in the chapter 11 cases of Heywood Healthcare, Inc., helping achieve a global settlement providing recoveries to unsecured creditors.

Andrew holds a J.D., summa cum laude, from the University of Maine and a B.A., cum laude, from the University of Massachusetts.

He is ranked by Chambers USA for Bankruptcy and Restructuring (2019–2026), included in The Best Lawyers in America for Bankruptcy and Creditor Debtor Rights / Insolvency and Reorganization Law since 2021, and is a Recognized Lawyer by The Legal 500 US for Restructuring (including Bankruptcy): Corporate (2025). He was a recipient of the American Bankruptcy Institute's 40 Under 40 Award in 2019 and co-chaired ABI's Health Care Committee.
